So the wind is blowing: Airhead Surf Diary

After a long spell of wind from the Northeast we have now had the wind that was well over due, fantastic South West wind and the guys and girls have been out making the most of every second.

Toby Raw was at the BKSA round 2 event in Barrow in Furness and we will have info on how he got on and what this round was like in the coming days, the one thing that is for sure this round had plenty of wind.

On Saturday 12th May Jason our Kitesurf instructor held an open day at the new Airhead kite surf school on Littlehampton beach….. the day was to promote kitesurfing in a positive way to beach hut owners and locals alike, the day was a huge success with Jason being run off his feet all day.. letting folks try the trainer kites and giving everyone a short lesson on how to fly and control a kite. The young and old came away from the experience with a real sence of what kite flying is about and leaving them wanting to do more in the future . Well done Jason for all your hard work…..

    Tobys own words

    Friday
I arrived at the beach at 10am to find that there was wind everywhere else in the uk but not at Walney, it was bang offshore and about 5mph, about an hour of waiting for wind and it swung round to the south westerly direction and got to about 12 knots so i pumped up my 12m torch 3 and flew it for a bit, I then saw somebody get up and going on the water so I gave it ago it had then picked up to about 14 knots and got plaining. for about half an hour .

    Saturday
Woke up to find that there was 25-30 knots of south westerly wind which is bang onshore at Walney I pumped up my 8m and the wind eased off a bit so I pumped up my 10m and flew it on short lines I was well powered to start off with then the wind dropped off little by little, meanwhile the pro competition got underway, they nearly got all the rounds done, the wind really dropped off to about 11 knots making kiting hard, the BKSA decided to put out the juniors beacause they were lighter, my firsrt heat didnt go well because I decided to do all my small tricks to get some points and in the last 30 seconds I went for a slim which did go well but I landed in shallow water and hit the bottom. In my second round the wind dropped to about 9 knots so I thought I would do big tricks rather than play it safe, first trick I went for was a kgb which I didnt get any height for and ended up doing half a backloop then on my tack back in I done a back to toe, walked back out to sea and done a sweet raily to blind as I must of hit a gust as I was airborn hooked in and rode to shore toeside, walked back out to sea done 1 tack to try and gain some ground then I built as much speed up as possible and landed a slim perfectly.
The wind dropped even more and round 3 was posponed till the next day.

    Sunday
No wind all day only stayed at the beach for the prize giving I ended up 3rd.
I would like to thank Naish for all their support at the comp.
